The proof is in the pudding By Collin on 3/1/13
Collin would recommend this product to a friendI did about a month of solid research before committing to bio pellets as a form of biological filtration. After scouring the web, I decided to give the bio pellet kit a try.
The reactor was super simple to set up (total set up time was around 15 minutes). The reactor is made from heavy duty plastic. Another quality product from BRS!
After 8 weeks, my Elos nitrate test kit tested between 2.5 - 1.0ppm nitrate (the colors were too hard to distinguish). My nitrates were stuck at 10-15 ppm for the past year no matter what I tried (water changes, chaetomorpha). Simply unbelievable. My nitrates are dropping by the day.
Make sure you read, and re-read the instructions on the BRS website---it'll save you a ton of time and headaches down the line.
Like the instructions say --- be patient! I tested nitrates almost every other day (I'm impatient like most reefers), but the patience finally paid off after 8 weeks.
You'll need to have a decent skimmer if you run bio pellets, otherwise you won't see the results (or so I've read). My Tunze 9002 skimmer started to produce dark tea-colored skimmate after running bio pellets.
One tip though---do NOT purchase the Maxijet1200 pump if you plan on running a smaller pump with this reactor. The newer Maxijet pumps rattle cos it can't handle the head pressure. Instead, order the Cobolt Aquatics pump (made in Italy). I'd recommend going the Mag3 if you can (like BRS recommends).
Like some, I experienced cloudy water, but as long as you have a decent skimmer, and lots of water movement, you should be fine. My livestock and corals survived, and are now showing full polyp extension. If you have an ORP meter, keep on eye on it so that your oxygen levels don't drop too much. Install extra powerheads if you need to oxygenate your water. The cloudiness subsides after 3-4 days. However, your results may vary.
Above all, be patient, follow the instructions, and you shall be rewarded. I'll definitely run my next tank using biopellets. -
Another winner from BRS By shaungee on 12/28/12
shaungee would recommend this product to a friendI got the combo kit from BRS just recently, so I can't comment on the effectiveness of biopellets in my system yet, but this reactor is the same quality build as the dual GFO/carbon reactor from BRS I run on my tank and love it. The included canister is key in maximizing up flow in the system. I had this thing hooked up in minutes, and got a perfect tumble thanks to the included control valve. In my experiences with BRS products, if you want to get great product at a great price, it doesn't get any better than this! Highly recommended. -
Flawless By Colin on 11/25/12
Colin would recommend this product to a friendGreat product for a great price. Looked around a lot and was unable to find anything similar for even close to this price AND the biopellets are included! low nitrates with happy fish and coral! Would buy again. -
Great!! By joe on 10/2/12
joe would recommend this product to a friendI have 2 of these on separate tanks. They are easy to use, a great price and easy to set up. No complaints here. Another great but from brs. -

great By Andy on 7/20/12
Andy would recommend this product to a friendthis system workes great i think its a mush have for the tank -
Everything but the pump By Lee on 6/18/12
Lee would recommend this product to a friendA complete kit for biopellets - just add water...and a pump. Pellets need good agitation within the reactor chamber so dont skimp on the pump output. -
All in one By Christopher on 5/18/12
Christopher would recommend this product to a friendIts everything you need to get the reactor going, and if you get at all confused with the set up, they have a movie outlining everything you have to do -
Tumbles pellets great, nitrates cut in half after 1 week By Nathan on 4/13/12
Nathan would recommend this product to a friendI'vs been dosing vodka per the reef central write up for a month now, with inconsistant results. As a scientifically minded person, I wanted to try. Vodka dosing for the experience but found that my nitrate levels were variable, not to mention the cloudy water. I put the brs biopellet reactor in a little more than a week ago, and gave one last dose of vodka. My tank cleared up in a couple of days, then a small bacterial bloom with cloudiness, now my skimmer is pulling out dark stinky stuff, my water is clearing up, and my nitrates which have been at 40 since the day I put uncured live rock in my tank 4 months ago have come down to 20 in a few days. Will update when they hit 5. Water is crystal clear now, and fish are happy. Pellets tumble good with the mj1200 but i wish I had bought the double reactor , mag drive 3 and the biopellet canister so i could run a carbon reactor before the biopellets off the same pump. -
work well By meng on 1/7/12
meng would recommend this product to a friendi ordered this kit for my 55gal it work well, 1 week after added with zeobak tank lookin good sps color is brighter. but skimmer is acting up, wish the push connector was a bit better it leak a bit at first -
Great Results By Bruce on 12/27/11
Bruce would recommend this product to a friendIve had a noticable decrease in Nitrates, and my corals are doing great. Ive been using it for 5 months and very happy with the results. Only downside is I have to clean it every week because the strainer gets clogged and pellets quit tumbeling.

BRS biopellets are made from 100% natural Polyhydroxyalkanoates. PHA is a natural substance produced by bacteria to store carbon and energy which makes it the ideal solid carbon source for denitrifying bacteria in the aquarium. BRS bio pellets are produced by a leader in the industry, designed specifically for denitrification in aquaria and we believe it to be the best product available. Use of bio pellets will also remove phosphates, combined with wise food selections it can be the only type of phosphate control required.
We recommend 1 cup (236 ml) of BRS biopellets per 50 gallons of system volume.
Solid carbon dosing (biopellets) has recently become an extremely popular method of removing nitrates from the aquarium. The exact method of denitration can be different for each tank but it mainly consists of a few things:
- Nitrate laden Bacteria is removed via the protein skimmer
- Bacteria directly converts nitrite into nitrous oxide so nitrate is never produced
- Bacteria consumes nitrates and processes them down into nitrogen gas
- Nitrate laden Bacteria is consumed by tank inhabitants like corals and sponges
Depending on the system it should take 4-8 weeks for the bacteria population to multiply and begin its work on your nitrates. Once you have the reactor going we suggest not making any adjustments for 8 weeks. Give the media and bacteria time to adjust to the parameters found in your tank and begin working. The absolute best advice we can give with this system is to set it up and forget about it for two months. Unless something is obviously not right resist all temptation to make any changes until the two months are up.
Feed pump notes - You may use a variety of different feed pumps for this reactor but there are two popular options we recommend.
Mag drive 3 – This pump is more than strong enough to tumble the biopellets continually and will likely have to be dialed back using the included valve. This will allow room for you to turn up the flow inside the reactor if it were to slow down due to tank debris collecting in the cartridge strainer. This pump option requires the least amount of maintenance and effort.
Maxijet 1200 – This is an affordable option and works well within a few constraints.
NOTES
- It is important to install the reactor close to the water level of your tank/sump to minimize head pressure.
- It is also important to keep the cartridge strainer free of floating tank debris. You can do this by using the foam maxijet prefilter, filter socks on your sump return and placing the pump in a clean area of your sump
- If it does clog you can clean the cartridge strainer as part of your standard maintenance schedule or upgrade the pump at a later date.
