Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

The Hanna Phosphate checker is an awesome little tool that will give you accurate easy to read results.  If you have bad eyes or have a hard time with color change test kits, the digital read out on the Hanna checkers is super nice and easy to read.  The biggest key with Hanna checkers is keeping the vials nice and clean for consistent results.

Three simple steps to results. The Hanna Phosphate Checker bridges the gap between simple chemical test kits and professional instrumentation. Accurate, affordable and easy to use. First, zero the instrument with your water sample. Next, add the reagent. Last, place the vial into the Hanna Phosphate Checker, press the button and read the results. Done.

Product Questions

I see on here that some users suggest buying the hi736 instead. Which one will work best to determine your overall PO4?
Question by: Justin on Jun 3, 2016 9:26:00 AM
Great question!
We personally use the Phosphate low range in house as it is accurate enough and we do not need to convert the reading from Phosphorous to Phosphate. While the Ultra Low range will give extra decimal placed to your answer We find this is not the most important. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Since the Hi713 and reagents are the same for both fresh water and marine, is it safe to assume variations of salinity will have no bearing on the results?
Question by: William Neiman on May 2, 2016 2:01:00 AM
Great question! That is a safe assumption to make, salinity should not effect the reading with this checker.
Answer by: Carter (Admin) on May 4, 2016 1:57:00 PM
how many test does this kit provide. Thanks.
Question by: Mark on Nov 30, 2013 6:00:00 AM
Hey Mark,
The phosphate checker itself comes with enough reagent for 5 tests. Reagent refills are sold in packs of 25 and can be found right here:

Does this meter require periodic calibration with some kind of calibration solution?
Question by: Eric on Jun 19, 2014 8:50:00 PM
Hi Eric,
One of the first steps every time you test is to zero out the meter, then you add reagent and test the actual sample. This is done every test but It does not require any sort of extra calibration procedure on top of that.

  • Great.. packaging needs improvement. By Yus on 9/26/2016

The product it's great and easy to use. Take away from having to match colors. However, the packages the reagent comes in need to be replaced with a scoop method because it's hard to get all the power out of the packages.
  • Unsure of accuracy By Mark on 9/3/2016

Iva had this a couple weeks now and have yet to get a reading above 0.00 after 4 tests. I run hc gfo but should still have some phosphates right?
  • Really only 6 tests By Jaimeadams on 7/15/2016

I am disappointed with the fact that it only comes with enough regent for 6 tests. Sure the digital read out is awesome and very helpful, but I really feel that for the price I should be able to test more than 6 times before having to give them more of my money
  • Easy to use By Eric Johnson on 4/6/2016

I hate trying to match colors on tests (ok, I'm also slightly red-green colorblind so that doesn't help!) and this makes it so much easier. Doesn't come with very many test packets so if you'll be doing a lot of testing you'll want refills but they're pretty inexpensive.
  • Dies right after warranty By SD Reefer on 4/6/2016

Problems with the light sensor the minute the 6 month warranty was up. Randomly worked and then completely dead. Tech support offered up $95/hour service or they said I'm welcome to order a another from them. Don't think so. The results I was able to get when it worked were extremely varied and I couldn't stand trying to get all the powder out of those tiny packets. Need to rethink design on those. Not pleased unfortunately.
  • Great Checker By KerryF on 3/29/2016

One star off for those silly packets for the reagent. Works well and seems very accurate. Lid seems to have a hard time staying closed with a vial in it the checker...no big deal really.
  • Nice for Accurate Low Range Testing By Michael on 3/18/2016

Like many other Hanna checkers this product takes the guess work out of phosphate testing. I have a special loathing for trying to decipher color coded phosphate test kits and this helps me solve that issue. I had to take 1 star off because getting the power into the vial is brutal, and I mean brutal.
  • It works, just have to get use to the reagents. By jay on 3/5/2016

Good too have two vials. One to set the checker, the other one to have the reagent all ready mixed.
  • Pointless By Coverttadpole on 1/20/2016

Save your money. I get more accurate results using API phosphate test and its significantly less money. Measures ppm just like API however the Hanna checker shows 0.00 and API shows 0 to 0.25 ppm. Even contacted Hanna to see if it was broke and their first response was to buy the HI736. So they seem to be aware that it's junk. Also, once you open the box it's yours. Bulk reef supply does not except returns on opened items. A little hard to consider buying a second piece of equipment when the first one doesn't work as it should. Also bought the HI758 calcium checker that works flawless. Watch the YouTube video as the instructions are not clear.
  • Works great By Bruce on 12/17/2015

'Reagent packets are difficult to open and pour into vial without spilling any. Otherwise it works great.
  • Not for Reefers By ReefDoc on 10/29/2015

First and foremost, if you are a reefer, this is not the checker for you. The ULR is the right one for a reefer. This will measure to an accuracy of +/- 0.04 but as a reefer you want 0 to 0.03 so that makes this useless. Oh and the packets of reagents are not good at all, come on Hanna get the proper reagents made already.
  • Love that you get an exact readout. By Matthew on 10/26/2015

This would be the ultimate tester if the reagent was alittle easier to manage. You are trying to poor powder from a little pouch into a tiny cylinder you think you got it all then you realize there is still powder stuck in corner of pouch... Then you ask is my test result accurate?? They need to come up with a better solution to adding the powder even if just a bulk buy option that comes in a container with a little scooper like the nyos or salifert powders come. And to top all of that of you are on the clock when you are trying to get this powder into test tube you have three minutes to get powder from pouch to tube without spilling then you need to get it completely mixed into water without air bubbles or finger prints or the machine turns off then you are left to recalibrate machine with different test tube of source water then test water powder is in... Is it accurate???? Exactly hate questionable results but once you get hang of can definitely get a number and much more accurate then any color matching test out there... Just need a better delivery system for reagent and problem solved.
