Hey Mark,
The phosphate checker itself comes with enough reagent for 5 tests. Reagent refills are sold in packs of 25 and can be found right here:

Does this meter require periodic calibration with some kind of calibration solution?
Question by: Eric on Jun 19, 2014 8:50:00 PM
Hi Eric,
One of the first steps every time you test is to zero out the meter, then you add reagent and test the actual sample. This is done every test but It does not require any sort of extra calibration procedure on top of that.

  • Hanna- do right to your customers and fix the packet!!! By Mrod on 6/27/2015

Hanna needs to redesign their packet design. If you like stress and frustration this is for you. Bottom line the packet design is a joke that outweighs anything else that is positive.
  • Easy By Bill on 6/16/2015

    Very organised and accurate
  • Seems okay By Homebrwr on 5/31/2015

This is the first Phosphate test kit I have owned. Simple to use but as others have stated getting the powder out of the package is very tedious and not sure how accurate the reading is if the exact amount is not added...
  • Simple fast accurate testing method. By RAMON on 5/17/2015

I used this tester for the first time yesterday , and was surprised how easy and accurate it was. Testing water can already be a long dreaded task, but this hannah checker makes it a snap!, and its accuracy was great as well
  • Good Investment By Pipe Doctor on 5/16/2015

This device takes the guesswork out of trying to associate a color shade with a number, however, the test cover does not fully close and they only give you 6-7 reagents for testing. So out of the box you (1) have to hold down the top cover when a vial is inside and (2) limited to only 6-7 tests before you need to buy more.
  • Small Complaints By Stephen on 5/6/2015

It seems to test well but the tester lid doesn't always snap closed properly. Also the packets of test powder are a little hard to get the powder out easily.
  • Good tester By Russell on 5/4/2015

This tester is so much handier than the API test. It gives you an actual number instead of guessing at a color. It is also way more sensitive than the API tests. The downside is trying to get all of that reagent from the packet into that little vial without spilling it all over the place AND doing it within the time given. If it takes you too long, you have to start over. All around, a good device with a couple of quirks.
  • Too inaccurate for reef tanks By Adam on 3/30/2015

This is a quality, easy to read test kit for phosphates, perfect for fish only or less-demanding reef tanks, but I wouldn't recommend buying this one for most reefers. The accuracy is only +/- 0.04 so if you're trying to maintain phosphates between 0.01 and 0.03 ppm then this kit is useless.

The ultra low range checker works on a parts per billion scale, which is probably more appropriate for the typical reef tank. It reads between 0 and 200 ppb, which is 0 and 0.2 ppm.

Oh, and I agree with everyone else who doesn't like the reagent packets.
  • Finger acrobatics with tiny sachet-like reagents By Join the Revolution on 3/29/2015

Seriously? I bought this and used it about 2 or 3 times. The process of placing this tiny bag of powder into a tiny vial is ridiculous- regardless if it is accurate or not, it is poor product development. Don't believe me? Buy and try it. Not for me, next.
  • YOU NEED THIS ONE NO MATTER WHAT By machote on 3/27/2015

the best phosphate test its easy and fast just remember BUY EXTRA CHARGES because it come with just like 5 thats why i put 4 of 5 stars i would prefer pay extra but dont have the need to make a extra purchase some weeks after i get it
  • Quality Product and easy to use By Jeff on 3/26/2015

The phosphate reagent package is what keeps me from giving it 5 stars. Took a couple of tests to get it down. I use both vials one for the benchmark and the other for mixing the reagent. I use a small square of notebook paper fold it to make a crease to funnel in bottle. That way i can shake all the reagent out of packet and have an easier way to slide the powder into the vial. Beyond that the testing is easy.
  • The only phosphate tester you should use By Nick on 3/22/2015

I have basically no algae in my tank, but I wanted to make sure and get accurate results as to what my phosphate levels were versus using liquid tests which are not always the most reliable. Little did I know that according to the Hannah checker, I have zero phosphate. There is a margin of error of +\- 0.04 but even 0.04 is still very good. Very happy with the purchase.
I wish hanna made a magnesium checker!
