Product Questions

I'm considering purchasing one of the Neptune Apex controllers (the $529 or the $549 version) and wondered about heater options. I see that the units include a temp probe, but I assume that doesn't regulate temp (other than communicating with a heater to turn it on or off) of the aquarium, it just measures the temp. Is that correct? If so, I was thinking of pairing it with a heater (800W finnex titanium heater (the one with out the thermostat)). Would I need to purchase the thermostat separate from this to plug into the Apex controller, or would the controller have some sort of built in interface to turn the heater tube on and off? At the end of the day, I just need to know what I would need to purchase to replace an old school stand along heater that I have now in my 180 gal reef tank. Thanks,

Nathan
Question by: nathan on Mar 14, 2014 3:08:00 AM
Hi Nathan,
The temperature probe itself only reads the temp, but you can use that information to act on an outlet. For example you could tell outlet number 1 to turn on if the temperature is below 78 degrees and off if it is over. This would allow it to control a heater.

In the interest of redundancy though, I would use a heater with a thermostat and then plug that heater/thermostat combo into an outlet on the apex. You can use the apex to turn that outlet off and cut power to both in the even the built in heater thermostat fails. Generally in this situation you would set the heater to say, 78 degrees, and tell the Apex to kill the power at 79 degrees. This way the built in controller does all the work, the apex is just a safety cut off.

As you said, this particular heater doesn't have a thermostat and while you could use the Apex to control it, it would be best to have another form of redundancy (like a heater with a built in temp control).

Since this heater requires a separate controller would it be a good option to use with an apex controller?
Question by: James on Dec 14, 2013 8:26:00 AM
Hey James,
It would be a great option for use with an Apex or other aquarium controller, in fact its what I use with mine!

Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Feb 5, 2016 9:58:00 AM
is it fully submersible?
Question by: alexander serrano on Jan 24, 2016 12:31:00 PM
Great question,
These were fully submersible. In many cases with heaters it is often recommended to keep the top section where the power cord connects out for safety. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Can the Finnex Deluxe heating tube be controlled with the Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper Titanium plus
Question by: Richard on Jun 21, 2014 2:44:00 PM
Hi Richard,
That wouldn't be a problem at all. Just plug the heater into one of the ReefKeeper outlets and then program that outlet to turn on and off based on the temperature.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Jun 21, 2014 2:44:00 PM
Do you still need their controller with Finnex Titanium TH-800 tubes if you have an Apex. I do have their tubes but no controller.
Question by: Steven on Jun 26, 2014 6:19:00 AM
Hi Steven,
You can plug the heating tube into an outlet on the Apex and control it via the Apex & temperature probe if you like.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Jun 26, 2014 6:19:00 AM
Hi, I am wondering if the reefkeeper lite would work to control this heater?
Question by: Tyler on Jul 31, 2014 5:16:00 AM
Hi Tyler,
That wouldn't be any issue at all. Just plug the heater into one of the outlets and you can use the Temperature probe on the RK system to turn that outlet on and off to heat the water as needed.

  • GREAT heater By JASON on 12/29/2015

i bought this for my 90 gallon set up ( I run 2 heaters) works with my apex for a simple install.
  • Great Heater By GLC on 12/16/2015

I've had two of these for 3 years heating two separate systems - controlled with my Apex and have never had an issue. I just bought a 3rd for backup - just in case. Highly recommended.
  • Best heater i have owned!! By Devin on 11/6/2015

This heater is amazing!! i use my Apex to control the heater, and between the two my temp never fluctuates more then .1 degree. works amazing!!!
  • 500 Watt tube without a thermostat. By Mark on 11/2/2015

Ordered 2 of these because the 200 Watt version I had with the digital controller was behaving unusually. The Apex is much better controlling these than the controller that came with the other version is. Still looking for a good solution for an additional controller for a fail safe. With a power bar it is very apparent whether the heater is working. I use 2 with a differential so that I can see how often the temperature swings are enough to require both heaters. Very happy so far. As far as I can tell I should expect to replace heaters every year or two, and I have spares on the shelf.
  • Horrible Customer Service By Mike on 7/23/2015

I bought 2 500W heaters for my 280G system for use in my sump. Within 3 days my apex made it clear one was not working. Tried different plugs, even other outlets. One clearly dead. Finnex put me through the ringer to make sure I was "trouble shooting" the unit. Warning me if it came back no fault found I'd be charged shipping. I assure them it's dead. They then come back with a warning that if it's defective due to "water damage" it's not covered and again I pay for shipping. Knowing I'm fine as clearly I used it as intended, I tell them I understand all this. They then proceed to tell me I have to pay for shipping BOTH WAYS. I'm in Canada. That would cost me more than half what the thing is wroth. I literally told them I'd rather throw it in the garbage and call it a loss. Never heard back. The other one has been running find for a month now.

Defective product happens sometimes, but there is no excuse for the poor service.
  • Quality By Andrew on 5/12/2015

great heater when paired with the Neptune Apex system very consistent temps
  • perfect for a system By Joseph on 4/25/2015

So for people heating there tank precisely using a controller such as digital aquatics, these are the way to go. Very accurate and even heat. Reliable, and durable. I used 3 500w heaters for my 350gallon.
  • Excellent product for use with an aquarium controller By Paleoreef103 on 4/23/2015

My temperatures are rock solid in my tank thanks to this product and my Reefkeeper controller. It is important to know that this product DOES NOT include a built in thermostat so make sure you have a temperature controller or a full aquarium controller with temperature probe. It heats up quickly and seems to be incredibly tough, though I have not tried to test its durability.
  • Nice heater By Ewan on 2/12/2015

This heater works great! I have it running off my apex and it keeps my temps very stable. I use one 500w one my 180 and it's perfect, it also fits great in my sump due to its small size. The others I looked at where too long for that amount of wattage.
  • Works Great! By Wade on 2/10/2015

I have two of the 800w units on my sump, they keep the temp perfect!
  • Built To Last! By Steve on 1/6/2015

This heater is very durable, corrosion resistant, and at a great price. What more could you ask for?
  • good value By George on 12/15/2014

Decided to get the 500w without the controller because I was going to hook it up to an apex systems and it works great.
