Bituminous carbon is the most commonly used carbon in the aquarium industry. The small pore structure results in medium performance combined with low dust and price. Removes yellowing, pigments, contaminants and irritants from your tank. Great low-cost alternative to our other aquarium carbons.

BRS Bulk Bituminous Carbon Specifications:

  • Iodine Number: 1000
  • Mesh Size: 6 x 10
  • Hardness Number: 90

Instructions: We recommend 1 Tablespoon of BRS Special Grade Bituminous Carbon per 4 Gallons of tank water either placed in a media bag, or reactor.

Product Questions

How can you tell when the carbon is spent, or maybe in general how often should I change it? Though it depends on the amount of contaminants present is there a rule of thumb? Assume I use a good salt and RODI system on an average stocked mixed reef tank, carbon is in a media bag next to the bio balls. Thanks.

Hi there,

The biggest indicator will be when the reactor becomes clogged, I usually just replace it every 3 weeks.

Take care

Does this product come with a mesh bag to go in a high flow area instead of a reactor?

Thank you!

Hi Robert,
This is just the bulk carbon. If your deciding to just use a filter sock that would be purchased separately and your best bet would be the 4x8 mesh drawstring filter sock which you can find at the link below.
