Product Questions

why are these only recommended for fish only set ups in salt water?
Question by: andy on Aug 18, 2014 7:05:00 PM
Hi Andy,

We don't recommend bio-ball type filter medias for reef aquariums because they aren't really necessary. After the typical reef system has cycled, large populations of the bacteria responsible for breaking down fish waste have colonized on the rock used to make your reef structure. This is the same purpose of the bio-balls, to provide surface area for bacteria to grow.
In a reef system you will typically have fewer fish than a fish only system so additional biological filter media may eventually becomes a place where organic can be trapped which in turn breaks down in the system before they can be removed. This will actually be detrimental to the system and make maintenance more difficult than running a bare sump.
That being said, if your reef system has very minimal rock in the display or you have a high bioload you may want to add additional biological filtration media/live rock to the sump.

Hope this helps!
Have a great day :)
